Back in December 2019, my friend Hanna and I visited Lyon, France, for its famous Festival of Lights. (I'm excited to say that I'm planning to attend again later this year!) Lyon is known as one of Europe’s most famous mural cities. Even if you aren’t looking for them, if you wander around enough, you’re likely to find one — there are around 100 different murals around Lyon. The mural trend started in the 1970s with a group of French art students who traveled to Mexico to study wall painting, where Mexican muralist Diego Rivera had launched the style 50 years earlier. Eventually, the mayor of Lyon commissioned this group and others to paint murals to brighten the city up.
